Jesus + Graphic Design
I once questioned my path as an artist… But now, I know who I create for!
Today, I’m encouraging us all to use our God-given gifts and talents to promote His Kingdom. Also in this article, I tell my story and how God led me into this new chapter of serving Him and His Church through graphic design. Welcome, I’m glad you are here.
17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” Mark 1:17 NIV
Using What God Has Given
Recently, God placed within me a deep sense of responsibility to use what He had placed in my hands. It took time, but now I’m ready to serve God with the gift He has given me: communicating visually through the art of graphic design.
But before I understood it all, I spent about 3 years in a season of waiting. Yes... it really took time… This was probably the most transformational season of waiting since I was saved in 2021. Before allowing me to move forward, God cleansed me of a corrupted worldly mindset! He purified my art from idolatry! Though it was tough, He changed me. It’s huge! Praise the Lord!
Honestly, waiting was needed to clarify not only my calling, but also the real purpose of art. I really struggled to see that art and graphic design can be useful for advancing His Kingdom. I had to learn that God wants us to make art. That God invented it all and that He provides even very detailed guidance for creating it! I also didn't know that the artistic path requires surrender:
Answering our callings means making God’s Kingdom known and serving others as our purpose.
And no matter what gifts we have been given, we must employ everything God has entrusted to us!
Employing Our Gifts
Yes, the Bible teaches us to actively use all that God has placed in our lives. This is clearly seen in The Parable of the Talents, where the servant is called lazy for burying the talent that had been given to him for gain profit:
26 “But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. 27 So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. Matthew 25:26-27
This passage tells us not only about the importance of being productive, but also that the consequences of neglecting our God-given things are severe! The following verses show that failing to serve the Lord leads to judgment:
28 So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.
29 ‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ Matthew 25:28-30
Honestly, this parable changed my life! It opened my eyes to how crucial it is to value what God has placed in our lives. And it planted in me that sense of responsibility to take real actions.
Our God has given each of us gifts and talents so that we may serve Him faithfully, productively, and profitably for His Kingdom—not for our own purposes!
Image Matters
Now that I understood God wants us to use everything for the benefit of His Kingdom, I had to find answers about the purpose of the artistic tools I received from Him. I questioned where I should place my 15 years of experience in creating logos, various graphics, and even handcrafts.
After praying and fasting, God placed on my heart: image matters. Let me explain.
God's Guidance in the Arts
To understand why image matters, first we have to admit that God is the source of our talents, gifts, and good ideas, and everything else. He is the Source of all good and lovely!
Yes, God is the Creator of all: nature, beauty, physics, mathematics, geometry, or science. Even the famous perfect composition rule, often called the “Divine Proportion,” the golden ratio, or phi, is inspired by God’s creation!
Just think… Such a thing as art academies exists! Principles of composition exists. The wisdom of aesthetic excellence also exists! Visual messaging exists! Graphic design exists! Arts and crafts exists! Across many chapters in the book of Exodus, we see that God provides artistic guidance too, which means that He is the One who participates in the world of art! Yes, art is one of God’s gifts, one of His callings, and one of His wills!
Moreover, God fills artists with His Spirit so that His majesty can be expressed rightly, according to His purposes:
3 And I have filled him with the Spirit of God,in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, 4 to design artistic works, to work in gold, in silver, in bronze, … Exodus 31:3-4
He cherishes us and leads us in the divine direction. Filled with the Spirit of God, our creativity becomes purposeful!
So now let me ask you (& me) a couple of questions:
Why should we misuse art? Why neglect what is divine and comes from God?!
God’s kingdom is good, holy and amazing, and we should represent Him using all the God-given tools we have, including arts. We must preach not only through words, but visually too!
Visual Communication
The truth is that good image preaches about God’s glory! Godly and informative visualisations helps us reflect the Light of Jesus Christ!
Yes, artistic expression is one of the tools we can use to make His Kingdom known. And Jesus must be known! The price He has paid must be known! His love must be known! The truth must be known! Eternal life must be known! Duties regarding good deeds must be known!
His Body (Church) must be known as well! And by this I mean… Our duty is also to be the best representatives in every field where He has called us!
While we know that God calls all of us to His service in different ways, it is important to see that there is a difference between spiritual gifts and talents:
We are not only prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers, but also His musicians, His poets, His writers, His politicians, His entrepreneurs, and many others. And we are all called to serve one another as one body in Christ. All called to remain productive for one purpose—promote Jesus. The Bible tells us:
10 As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 1 Peter 4:10
Therefore, we must keep in mind that we are here to serve one another with all our God-given tools, including branding and visual design! AHA!
Christ's Brand Ambassadors
In 2 Corinthians 5:20, apostle Paul tells us, that we are the ambassadors for Jesus:
20 Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ,...
Honestly, the concept of “ambassadors for Christ”feels very relevant to my work experience:
A brand ambassador is officially described as a person hired to represent a brand in the best possible way. Their main responsibilities include influencing audiences, increasing product or service sales, and building brand awareness. Brand ambassadors communicate and represent a brand’s values, ethics, and principles, and serve as positive advertisers. They are trusted to strengthen the relationship between customers and a product or service, by using promotional strategies!
Now, let’s apply this to us, followers of Jesus:
As ambassadors for Christ, our role is to preach the Gospel, and represent and advertise love, salvation, light, peace, and other good news, in the best possible way!
And so,
here I found an answer for how to use my knowledge and expertise in graphic design:
If God tells us that image matters, then our businesses, brands, churches, charitable organisations, products, services or individuals should stand out in every aspect: through their faith, good deeds and purposes, verbally, and through their visual communication! Tadaaa!
Turns out that my beloved branding is a wonderful tool that can help reflect our heavenly identity and the originality of our unique callings! It matters! Yes! Image matters! We can’t mistake it. We can't be poor representatives with all these perfect Jesus’ teachings, Godly paths, Spirit inspired ideas, gifts and talents God has given us! We have to communicate visually well! Yes, heartily communicate Jesus, and do it for Jesus:
23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, Colossians 3:23
Branding For Jesus
Even though it took time for me to be restored, I can now announce that I am here to serve God with the gift He has given me.
My artistic mission is to help spread the message of Jesus and His kingdom visually.
Now, after all has been said, I want to encourage everyone to mention His name as much as possible! My heart wants to see more beauty and light in our communities! I want to help us all represent Him well—boldly, through love, word, worship, prayer, good deeds, and good images.
Jesus deserves it all! His works are amazing! He cares for the poor, the hurting, the sick, the traumatised, and the vulnerable... He is our Savior! He is our daily Bread, Life, Way, Truth, Love... He brings true wisdom, joy and love into this world! He is the Light! He is the One who said:
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16
Honestly…
I didn’t know this just a year ago, but God prepared me, guided me, and taught me so that I could serve Jesus Christ faithfully and productively!
Truly, Father trained me for this artistic mission. He put courage in me. He equipped me through my education and experiences. Also, He loved... He protected... He provided even while I was an unbeliever!
Needless to say, 2026 years ago, He sent His only Son to die for…
Our Lord deserves the very best we can give! This is why I want to use everything He has placed in my hands for His glory and the honour of His name!
Thank You Jesus! Thank You Jesus! Thank You Jesus! I am here for You! Please, Lord, use my gifts and talents to advertise Your purpose! Use my creativity to help build awareness of Your magnificent kingdom! I am not ashamed of YOU!
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, … Romans 1:16
