What if modesty isn't oppression, but freedom?

It’s worth asking: if Jesus did not teach people to present themselves in a sexually revealing way, then who did?

7 … For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16)

Just imagine the scenario: Jesus comes back right now. Like n o w.

Yes, Jesus, our precious Savior, who took our sins on Himself by dying on the cross, who loved us with the most profound ever imaginable love, who promised us eternal life... who taught us to be holy... who gives us daily bread, daily hope, daily life... who protects us from evil, and so much more about Him!

And so He comes back to this:

A stream of social media posts, exposed bodies, prideful looks, fashionable labels, and a heart weighed down when approval does not come… Wait a minute... doesn’t this feel contrary to what is right? I believe this is not what our Heavenly Father desires.

But why some women (and actually men) don’t cover themselves enough? What is it that drives the desire for provocative clothing, intense makeup, and other beauty routines? What’s really behind that? Why is this such a common struggle among people these days?

And what about holiness?

Did Christ ever emphasise the importance of outward beauty above the heart? The answer, we understand, is no.

Indeed, Jesus does not judge according to outward looks. But at the same time, I have never seen Jesus encourage dressing in a revealing way. He has never called us to make our sexuality visible to everyone.

Most of us probably never even thought that someone actually urged people to discard their clothes and even natural beauty leading them toward nudity and a revealing mindset.

What if I told you who truly did it for us all?

Anti-modesty Revolution

Rebellion against God

Since the sexual revolution of the 1950s, many things once considered improper have become widely accepted as standard. As we spoke already, through media, people freely share intimate details of their lives, including their nakedness and sexuality.

Moreover:

Pornography became widespread. Premarital sex turned into a usual part of modern living. Somehow, gender has been made uncertain, though God created only two. Questions about sexual orientation and existentialism have become a global ‘priority’, spreading chaos everywhere… These are real consequences of real events.

Real scientists, researchers, and authors have promoted and encouraged ungodly sexual practices, presenting them as natural to human behaviour. Just search these “pornography professors”: Alfred Charles Kinsey; Masters and Johnson; Betty Friedan; Simone de Beauvoir; Herbert Marcuse; Hugh Hefner...

All of them propagated anti-biblical and destructiveteachings, resulting in the consequences we face today. Despite conducting sexual tests on children, they were able to find humanity’s weak point—sexuality—by offering a false ‘freedom’ from God: normalising nakedness and more.

This revolution didn’t happen instantly, but through years of deception, corrupt influences have raised generations of young adults blind to morality and truth! Countless souls have fallen victim to lies and deceit!!!

And the major questions are here:

Are we even aware of the origins of the standards we’ve been taught to follow? Have we reflected on what kind of standards we are living according to?

Lord, please search our hearts and guide us with Your wisdom.

1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. (Romans 12:1)

The truth is this:

The sexual revolution was never in harmony with God’s will. It stood in clear opposition to His design. The sexual revolution is nothing but a rebellion against the beauty of God’s creation!

They stood against God. They have spread filthy lies, damaged communities, polluted our thinking, and promoted ungodly behaviour worldwide. Obviously, the enemy’s goal is to sow conflict between God and His people, and to drag as many souls as possible into hell along with them…

Do not be deceived!!!

God’s creation is perfect and beautiful, and we are called to value and preserve it. Modesty is one of God’s most beautiful gifts to humanity!

Understanding God’s Purpose

Transformation

We all likely understand that the core of following Christ is transformation. To experience true change in Christ, we must challenge and overcome the mindset influenced by the sexual revolution and other ungodly forces.

Much of what we consider normal today is guided by evil forces we often fail to notice, making God’s Word the only fully reliable source. It is essential to remember that God is love; therefore, we must trust Him and His Word. His Word always carries a true purpose.

For example, Jesus taught:

11 So He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. 12 And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.” (Mark 10:11-12)

In the light of God’s Word, adultery carries a deeper meaning than mere punishment. The truth is that God never invite anyone to divorce! Also, God does not seek to judge or punish anyone; this is not the true purpose of this command. And yes, unfortunately, not all marriages survive, but God wants us to be open to the beauty of His creation and to embrace a Christlike mindset, loving one another as He loved us! Always forgiving, always compassionate.

In the same spirit of love, we ought to follow all God’s instructions and standards.

Romans 13:14 says:

14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.

As believers, we are called to live fully aligned with Jesus. To “put on” Christ is a metaphor for adopting His character, His mindset, and His way of life. It is a daily choice to let Him shape our hearts, our decisions, and our lives.

We also must understand that our actions with our bodies are not just physical — they carry deep spiritual meaning. Our bodies belong to God and were made to serve Jesus Christ. And even more: when a person becomes a Christian, they become part of His Body. So if we are part of the body of Christ, we must embrace the mindset of Jesus Christ:

15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not! (1 Corinthians 6:15)

Jesus is holy, and He calls us to live in holiness. Just as He walked in righteousness, we too must walk in righteousness. Our bodies must be honoured with respect and modesty, preserving our purity and the purity of those around us.

30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. (Proverbs 31:30)

The God-Given Benefits of Modesty

Witnessing God’s Love

Marriage was designed by God out of love for us, as a sacred and beautiful union, with sexuality reserved solely for husband and wife. (What could be more profound than this?!) And yes, this means we are called to live modestly in every way—spiritually and physically. We are called to honour and nurture marriage, which involves practisingmodesty even for those who are unmarried, out of respect for God’s design.

Modesty begins with a righteous mindset. When her heart and actions are godly, a man of integrity will be drawn to her.

In marriage, modesty nurtures intimacy and privacy, creating a holy secret shared only between the two. It develops trust and mutual confidence in our hearts.

Modesty is a pure expression of love. It transforms relationships, making them righteous, trustworthy, divine, gentle, joyful, and sweet.

Modesty turns marriage into more than just a union; it becomes a true love story, free from doubts, guarded by purity. True and trust.

Through modesty, the inner temple is honoured and elevated for the sacred person who is husband or wife.

And most importantly, modesty in appearance isn’t about us—it’s about the influence we have on those around us!

Modest attire allows a woman to express submission to her husband and embody Godly principles:

  • She prevents her body from being desired by other men.

  • She avoids encouraging immoral thoughts or actions.

  • She keeps herself from becoming a source of temptation.

  • She respects her sister’s husband and will not allow him to fall into sin because of her actions.

  • She preserves holiness by choosing modesty.

  • She shows respect for God’s holy creation, her husband and kids, and protects them from envy or embarrassment.

  • She honours her marriage vows, remembering that she and her body belong only to her husband (or Jesus if unmarried) !!!

4 The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. (1 Corinthians 7:4)

When a wife is modest, the man she has accepted to share her life with experiences a deeper, true connection with her. He no longer shares her beauty with anyone else. He no longer has to worry about envy. He honours her dedication with dignity and takes full responsibility for her, happily. He leads with love and honour. With faith, with Jesus.

10 Who can find a virtuous wife?

For her worth is far above rubies.
(Proverbs 31:10)

20 She extends her hand to the poor, Yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy. (Proverbs 31:20)

True Beauty

Godly Womanhood

The Bible shows that true modesty in a woman is rooted in her character and inner self. 1 Timothy 2:8-10 teaches us:

8 I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; 9 in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, 10 but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works. (1 Timothy 2:8-10)

Modesty is self-restraint in behaviour, appearance, and attitude, showing respect for God and others while valuing inner character over outward display. A woman’s beauty is not just in her modest clothing, but in the way she lives. True beauty comes from a God-loving heart and shows in her deeds:

  • Loving and caring for family;

  • Being helpful in the household;

  • Advising younger women;

  • Caring for the poor, widows, and orphans;

  • Teaching, mentoring and encouraging others in faith;

  • Supporting others without pride or show;

  • Practicing discretion and self-control;

  • Remaining obedient to God by living faithfully in all aspects of life, relationships, and speech.

True beauty is found in thoughtful communication, discretion, and a gentle spirit, enabling a woman to embody God’s authentic, incorruptible design, as also described in 1 Peter 3:3‑4:

3 Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel— 4 rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptiblebeauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. (1 Peter 3-4)

Again, this verse highlights what matters most is the inner personality, not external show or symbols of wealth. Life in Christ is not defined by social standing or riches. God sees what cannot fade, what is eternal, enduring, and pure, such as love, patience, gentleness, kindness, and other fruit of the Spirit. Life in Christ focuses on eternal gains where spiritual growth is the true priority.

Scripture teaches us that our focus should not be on clothing, for life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing (Matthew 6:25). We must always seek after Jesus above all else:

33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. (Matthew 6:33)

5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, for that is one and the same as if her head were shaved. (1 Corinthians 11:5)

Understanding Authority

Head Coverings

1 Corinthians 11:3 says:

3 But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. (1 Corinthians 11:3)

This verse explains that the LORD stands above all, followed by Jesus, then man, and finally woman. This means that woman submits to man, man submits to Jesus, and Jesus submits to the LORD. (If a woman is single or widowed, her head is Christ directly.)

This is the order established by Heaven, and we should always remember it, for it is the foundation of the spiritual balance within our families. It is essential to see that God’s order exists to provide guidance and harmony, not to oppress or harm anyone.

God’s creation is beautiful! God is holy, and everything He has designed reflects His holiness. God’s purposes are higher than human understanding, and we are called to honour His order. In God’s design, hierarchy serves a goodpurpose: it brings unity and balance, not control-freak behaviour. Yet it must always be embraced with respect and love.

The Bible instructs us through the following verses:

9 Nor was man created for the woman, but woman for the man. 10 For this reason the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. (1 Corinthians 11:9-10)

Through Scripture, women are encouraged to cover their hair, symbolising submission to God’s ordained authority. Moreover, modest apparel and head coverings are not only for our own benefit, but also to help protect others from temptation and sin, by guarding their eyes. By nature, men are visually attracted to certain aspects of a woman’s appearance, including long hair and specific parts of the body. That’s why it’s important for us to dress modestly, involving wearing head coverings.

The Bible tells us:

3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. (Philippians 2:3)

Modesty begins with a mindset of consideration for others. It starts with us.

We should cherish modesty as a God-given gift, protecting us from sexual sin, immorality, and a corrupted, evil mindset. Modesty is true freedom! And modesty is not a restriction but a God-given blessing.

I hope my reflections have inspired or encouraged you.

Amen.
